BIRTH Thomas Patrick Murphy, the fifth of nine children, was born on February 1, 1874 or possibly Jan 10, 1876(according to social security application) in Ballindooly, Carrowbrowne, Galway, Ireland or village of Kilroghter according to Ireland Civil Registration Birth Index. He was baptized on Feb 5, 1874 in Castlegar, Galway, Ireland. According to Massachusetts, State and Federal Naturalization Records, (1798-1950) his father was Patrick Murphy, a farmer, and his mother was Ellen Glynn of Kilroughter.
PARENTS: Thomas’s father, Patrick Murphy was born in 1846 in Kilrghter, Carrowbrowne, Galway, Ireland. He married Ellen Glynn (1846—1896). Patrick and Ellen had nine children all born in Galway: Michael (b. Sept 1, 1865), Celia (b. July 14, 1867 in Galway), Mary (b. Feb 2, 1871), Michael (b. June 28 1872), Thomas Patrick (b. Feb 1, 1874-1939), Bridge (b. 1876), Hanora (b. Jan 20, 1877), Mary (b. Sept. 27, 1879), and finally Patrick (b. 1875). His wife Ellen died in 1896, and Patrick probably died between 1901 and 1911).
GRANDFATHER Thomas Patrick’s grandfather was named Michael Murphy.
EMIGRATION, MARRIAGE, AND OCCUPATIONS He emigrated from Galway Co Ireland from Queenstown, Ireland and arrived in New York on April 1 or 8th, 1897 on the SS Majestic Passenger out of Queenstown when he was 20 . He boarded at 13 Bonair Street according to the 1900 Census. He returned to Ireland in 1903.. At 28, he returned to Boston on September in 1904. He was listed on the SS Cretic Passenger Manifest. He spent five years in Boston between 1898 and 1903 according to the SS Cretic Passenger Manifesto. On his voyage to Boston, his occupation was listed as laborer. He had $30 in currency to his name. He was headed to his cousin Mrs. Silkl at 13 Bonair Street in Somerville, Massachusetts. He moved by 1910 to 50 Bonair Street. At this time he was a wagon driver according to 1910 Census.
When he was thirty-one, he married Sarah Costelloe on December 9, 1906, in Arlington, Massachusetts. She was twenty-three. At the time he was listed as a teamster and she was a domestic. In 1918, he lived at 20 Bonair Street. His World War I draft car registration was granted on September 12, 1918. In 1920 Census, his occupation is listed as teamster in dump cart trade. They lived in Arlington, Massachusetts. They also lived at 51 Webster Street, in Somerville, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. In 1930, he rented 51 Webster Street in Somerville, Massachusetts, and his occupation was listed as laborer in building construction trade. His occupation is listed as Stone Cutter in 1935.
APPEARANCE, NATURALIZATION, AND DEATH Thomas Patrick at 59 years old was five foot, eight inches, and 140 pounds, with blue eyes and brown hair. His race was Irish. In January 1935, his petition for Naturalization was granted. He made his oath of allegiance on January 30, 1935. At the time, he lived on 51 Webster Street in Somerville, MA. He died four years later on January 3, 1939 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, just before his sixty-fifth birthday.
CHILDREN Thomas Patrick Murphy and Sarah had nine children between 1907 and 1925. John Paul Murphy ( May 13, 1907 in Boston to December 1983 at age 76.) Thomas (Tucker) Lawrence Murphy (1911-1992 at age 81) married Katherine Ann (Kitsy)on May 16, 1943, Stephen Joseph Murphy (June 26, 1916 to February 9, 1984 in Stoneham, Massachusetts, at the age of 67.) He married Millie Ann Rice. Vincent Michael Murphy was born June 29, 1918 and died March 2, 1958 at 40. Margaret Mary Murphy was born on July 20, 1920 and died July 11, 1995, in Belmont, Massachusetts, at the age of 74. She married Frank DeCaro. Mary Murphy was born on May 16, 1923 and died on September 24, 1998, in Marlborough, Massachusetts, at the age of 75. Sarah E Murphy was born on October 26, 1913, in Somerville, Massachusetts, and died on August 19, 1914, in her hometown within a year of her birth. Helen Theresa Murphy was born on June 2, 1908, and died in 1946 in her hometown at the age of 38. Laurence Murphy was born in 1925 in Massachusetts, when his father, Thomas, was 51 and his mother, Sarah, was 48. He died on September 4, 1949, in his hometown at the age of 24.
